Turning an idea into reality: Tamil Community Centre

Like many communities who have established themselves in Canada over the last few decades, there has historically been a gap in services and access to culturally relevant programs and spaces, especially in areas such as north-east Scarborough.

6 Degrees Consulting Managing Principal, Siva Vimalachandran sought out to improve this with leaders in the Tamil community, working together as volunteers to build community capacity and develop a successful strategy that has turned the idea of a Tamil Community Centre from something on paper into a joint announcement of government support by the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, the Premier of Ontario, and the Mayor of Toronto.

Siva currently leads the development of the Tamil Community Centre as Project Chair, working in partnership with the volunteer team that has secured infrastructure funding of $26.3M from the provincial/federal governments and a no-cost long-term land lease from the City of Toronto. These efforts have been the result of a highly focused and integrated strategy to build community and government support with the assistance of many project supporters and leaders in the Tamil community.

The Tamil Community Centre recently achieved charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency and is currently embarking on an ambitious capital campaign seeking donations to ensure the Tamil Community Centre is built to help address the gap in services available to the Tamil community and benefit the surrounding community.

This is the one of many activities that form Siva’s pro-bono work to help leave a lasting legacy for the benefit of future generations. You can learn more about this ongoing project by visiting www.tamilcentre.ca
